21 at the Frederick - Truly Charming

A few weeks ago, my spouse and I decided to have our date night at 21 at the Frederick, and we were both quite pleased with our selection. And that is an understatement.

The atmosphere is the first thing one notices as entering the restaurant requires going into the beautiful lobby of the historic Frederick building in downtown Huntington. The restaurant itself is very ornate, robust and romantic. The dim lights, quiet setting, and interesting decorum sets a great environment for dinner.

The service was perfect as our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and the specials, and he was very personable. He made just the right suggestions as we were served quite possibly the best steaks we've had in town. Extremely flavorful and topped off with a wondrous cheese mixture, and surrounded by flavorful sides and tasty warm bread.

So to recap: an atmosphere like any other around, wonderful service, and delectable food. All these things work together to easily make 21 one of the CVB's favorite upscale restaurants.

Pizza - with a twist or two...

The new kid on the block has been turning some heads... and for good reason. Backyard Pizza and Raw Bar located at 841 4th Avenue is the newest addition to an already impressive lineup of local restaurants in Downtown Huntington. The key to all the buzz surrounding their highly-anticipated opening? Taking an old Huntington favorite, then topping it off with some titillating twists!
Yes, I'm talking about the ol' the pizza pie: dough, tomato sauce, cheese, and maybe a little pepperoni or sausage, or if you're feeling adventurous maybe you add some olives or even pineapple. Sure, those ingredients sound good right about now - I mean, who doesn't love a good pizza? But Backyard Pizza has certainly made it a priority to think outside the box to the way they've approached one of our heralded meals.

The overall experience is new and exciting for this pizza place. Walking into the restaurant is a treat in itself as its tasteful decor leads to a very eclectic look and sophisticated mood. The wood fire oven that is used gives your pizza a more robust texture and a perfect crisp, and the toppings range from the classics of sausage and mozzarella to avocados, BBQ pork, ricotta, black beans, calamari, and habanero infused nacho cheese. Mouth watering yet? If for some reason it's not, maybe the raw bar would be more to your liking with items like panfried or BBQ New Orleans style oysters.

Next time you're in town, check this place out. It's good for casual dining, business lunches, or a date you want to impress.

The Power of Huntington

Over the years I have become quite fond of electricity.  I’ve always had it. I guess I’m really a city girl at heart.  I don’t like camping, the outdoors, heat, or being uncomfortable.  Some may call this high-maintenance.  I call it the way my Mama raised me.  Either way, when I was recently without power at my Southside home for 5 days, this caused a problem.  A big, sweaty, grouchy problem.

After “roughing it” for almost three days, this girl was done. Staying with friends was not an option because most of my friends were either also without power, or were harboring their own temporary shelters for other friends and family.  I made a few calls and was able to find one of the last remaining hotel rooms downtown. During check-in, I made friends with a lot of other local residents who were doing the same thing I was. The kids, who had already spent time in the hotel pool, didn’t seem to mind at all.  The lobby of 40+ people were mostly kind and gracious.  We were all in the same boat and just wanted some relief.

Making the best out of this situation seemed to be the only option here, but I never thought I would enjoy it as much as I did! “Living” downtown allowed me to walk to places like Uno’s and Rooster’s for dinner, stroll through Empire Books and pick up some new reading material, and browse some amazing shoes at Heels. I could walk to my favorite watering hole, Hank’s Fourth Avenue, and spend time with friends, many of whom were also without power. I realized that while most people were not enjoying this change in lifestyle -  I was not at all unhappy about my living situation! Having never lived downtown, I was experiencing all she had to offer in a different way than ever before. Shopping and dining experiences aside, my morning view over the Ohio River was an inspiring way to wake up. A view that screamed “There are people who have situations much worse than you.  Not just today, but every day. You just woke up to this.”

Every day I would go home and check to see if there were any signs of light.  Nope.  I think I secretly wanted the power out for another few days so I could continue my downtown vacation. It allowed me to have a freshly made bed every day, which usually doesn’t happen at home.  It allowed me a fresh breakfast every day, which never happens at home.  It allowed me newly laundered towels daily, which is usually a toss-up at home.

Ah, home.  Maybe I am starting to miss her.  The beautiful, tree-lined brick streets of the Southside.  Where I can walk to Ritter Park for an evening stroll (weather permitting, of course); I can walk to Speedway for my favorite breakfast: a fountain Coke (see earlier comment about fresh breakfast); I used to be able to walk to get yogurt, but now I can walk to get a pedicure.  Personally, I preferred the yogurt. I can talk to my neighbors, who have lived in the same house for 40 years, and where I have watched their grandchildren grow up in the backyard.

I guess the bottom line is, no matter what part of Huntington I live in, I love every inch of her! So different, yet lovingly familiar.

As for me… I am back home now to my un-made bed, empty refrigerator, and a bag of laundry.  And I couldn’t be happier.  I may just walk down the street and get a pedicure.

Taste of Asia: deliciously diverse

The Huntington area is home to some wonderful restaurants that boast an ethnic flavor: Tascali's, Rocco's, and La Famiglia are a just a few of our many Italian restaurants; Tahona Grille and Rio Grande headline a long list of Mexican restaurants; Nawab has excellent Indian food; then there's a plethora of fantastic eateries that specialize in food from the orient including Wonderful Restaurant, Thai House, and Hibachi. The one we are highlighting today is Taste of Asia found on 3rd Avenue which masters Japanese, Thai, and Chinese cuisines. The sushi is prepared in front of you and is of top quality, and the show that the Hibachi chefs put on is as entertaining as the food is delicious. The Chinese dishes are flavorful and authentic, and the Thai curry is savory and can also be delightfully spicy.
As with any restaurant we like to highlight, the service is great and the ambiance is awesome. You should definitely check it out next time you're downtown!

Jim's... It's just that good.

There have been countless articles, reviews, and blogs already written about Jim's Steak and Spaghetti House, but that is for good reason - Jim's has been one of the areas most popular eating establishments for decades.

Whether it's a strong sense of traditionalism or the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality that has preserved the restaurant's incredibly nostalgic charm, it's working. Tons of folks fill the downtown Huntington staple's booths every day and the friendly servers keep the delicious fish sandwiches and spaghetti with the famous Jim's meat sauce right on coming. Those that are familiar enough with Jim's know they have to get one of their slices of pie for dessert, and some (this author included) even look forward to the one week a year that the restaurant serves its famous strawberry pie.

At the CVB we have a tough time verbalizing to visitors just what exactly the Jim's experience is like, it truly is one of those places that must be experienced to be understood. With that said - if you haven't gone, you need to change that!

Marshall Artists Series Continues to Keep Keith-Albee Theatre Alive With Entertainment

Cabell County has always had a rich history of arts and entertainment.  One of the main theatrical attractions in our area is The Keith-Albee Theatre in downtown Huntington. The Keith Albee opened to the public in May of 1928 with vocalist Rae Samuels, several vaudeville acts, and a screening of “Good Morning Judge” with Reginald Denny.  Opening day admission was 50 cents per person, and all 3000 original seats were filled.


In celebration of its 50th anniversary, the Keith-Albee featured a recreation of a vaudeville show starring famed singer Rudy Vallee. In December 2006, the Keith Albee was host to the world premier of the Warner Brothers motion picture We Are Marshall, which brought Hollywood to Huntington!


In 1939 the Theatre became home to The Marshall Artists Series, which continues to bring a wide variety of entertainment to Huntington at the Keith-Albee including film festivals, Broadway shows, orchestras, musical guests, and comedians. Most recently, acts like Cee Lo Green, Jungle Jack Hanna, Elvis Costello, Michael McDonald and Glenn Campbell have graced the historical stage.  For information about what amazing performances are coming soon, visit The Marshall Artist Series website at http://www.marshall.edu/muartser/index.asp. Doo Wop Legends To Perform In Huntington

The Big Sandy Superstore Arena and Richard Nader are excited to announce Charlie Thomas Drifters, The Chiffons, Barbara Harris of The Toys and The Coasters will share the stage on Saturday, March 3rd beginning at 8:00pm at the historic Keith Albee Theater.

These four legendary groups will sing some of their biggest hits including:  "Save The Last Dance For Me", "Up On The Roof"; "He’s So Fine", "One Fine Day"; A Lovers Concerto" "Attack", "Yakety Yak", and "Charlie Brown" .

It may be cold out, but I'm getting some frozen yogurt!

Tropical Moon Frozen Yogurt (907 4th Avenue) is following an interesting concept popular in a lot of parts of the country. Essentially, a customer creates his or her own frozen treat by choosing the type of yogurt and toppings one would like. After the concoction is completed, it is weighed and price is determined by the ounce. Cool concept, and it's made quite the splash here in Huntington.

And for good reason...

It's delicious. Not only are there several types of unique frozen yogurt flavors to choose from, the freedom you have with mixing them is simply delightful. Personally, I like to get about three different yogurt flavors in there... it's just more exciting that way. There are lots of toppings as well. I like to mix it up with some fruit and other (not-so-healthy) sweet things!

Another one of the highlights of Tropical Moon, is its location. One can take a break from shopping downtown to stop in for a quick pick-me-up; or have dessert after a dinner at one of our wonderful downtown restaurants; or treat a date to a sweet snack before going into the Keith Albee for a show.

I'm definitely a big fan, and will be going there for a long time.

Also... don't forget to pick up your stamp card! The more ounces of frozen goodness you rack up, the closer you are to getting free yogurt!

Business is Booming at Heritage Station Shops

The holiday season proved to be a busy time of year for the shops at Heritage Station in recent months!

With a strong push for residents to “buy local”, many of the shops at Heritage Station showed an increase in business in recent months. Many were shopping for holiday gifts, others were visiting for the first time after hearing a radio or TV commercial, and others were visitors in our area looking for that unique local gift. We certainly hope that this is just a glimpse of increased shopping in the Heritage Station area for months and years to come!

The Greater Huntington Parks and Recreation District is working hard to fill all of the spaces at Heritage Station with unique and special places that will attract local residents and visitors alike.  The current shops include:

Black Sheep Burritos and Brews

Like with any new business that comes to town, we in tourism like to experience it firsthand so we can know whether or not to suggest the business to any newcomer to the area. Trust me, our staff will be recommending Black Sheep Burritos and Brews to many, many visitors.

On the corner of Third Avenue and Hal Greer, the location is excellent as it's right across from Marshall University's main entrance. It's a decent sized spot with plenty of seating, glamorous decorations, and even a bar. The vibe and servers at Black Sheep are equally impressive and welcoming.

The menu showcases an array of items with very different flavors blended in a mindblowing way. Savory and sweet and spicy and tangy are all delicately combined to make for exciting bites. If I may make a suggestion: go with the Flock of Tacos. This way you can mix and match any three of their unique tacos and find out what your favorites are-you are guaranteed to try something you've never tried before... and chances are, you're going to like it.

Tahona Grille-new restaurant, new favorite

322 10th Street has probably always been one of the best restaurant places in town. If one were to take location, decor, and ambiance into account, this place definitely stands out. It's right downtown, it's elegant and inviting, has a great vibe, great bar, and a unique layout.

Tahona Grille brings some exciting things to this already prominent location: vision, service, quality, and fantastic food. The hostesses and server were the right kind of friendly and very helpful, and even one of the managers, Ray Garcia, stopped by our table and talked for a while about all the exciting and refreshing ideas they have for the restaurant.

We ordered the guacamole for an appetizer (suggestion: order the guacamole for an appetizer), then we read through the menu to find a selection of Italian and Mexican entrees to choose from... that's right, Tahona Grille had quite a unique blend going here as they take the fusion of culinary styles and really make it work. I ordered the California Cheesesteak (delicious) and our CVB director, Tyson Compton, ordered the California Burrito (I snuck a bite, also delicious). It seems as if all the dishes come with a certain twist however, as my cheesesteak was topped off with fresh avocado, and the burrito came with french fries--on the inside!

Overall, we all had a great experience and would gladly recommend it to visitors and locals alike.

Huntington Prime: an awesome experience

One of the great things about being in the tourism industry is that there is a lot of travel involved. In these travels, I've been lucky enough to experience some great sights, attractions, and restaurants from major cities all over the country. Having said this, I can truly say that we have a real gem in Huntington Prime located on 4th Ave.

The selection is wonderful and the food is incredible, and something that makes the food truly stand out is that there is a concerted effort to acquire almost all that is served at the restaurant from local sources. Today, that is a popular and important trend around the country for many reasons including how it supports the local economy and the "green" benefits of it. But usually it takes more than the food to make a restaurant special, and Huntington Prime has it all...

The service is just right and the location is great as it is right in our walkable downtown, in a great building, with a great facade, and it certainly adds a touch of class to 4th Avenue. The ambiance is perfect as it is elegant but affordable, classy but modern, eclectic but comfortable, energetic but relaxed, quaint but trendy.

If you haven't yet made it out to this local treat, you should certainly consider it.

Heritage Farm's Spring Festival cancelled

A message from the Farm:

Due to the recent unprecedented heavy rains, the major storm that hit us Tuesday evening (which caused significant flooding of all our parking areas) and a weather forecast that calls for still more rain, we regretfully announce that we are having to cancel our 15th Annual Festival originally scheduled for Saturday, May 14, 2011.  We are fearful that the risk to people and their vehicles in the extreme mud is simply too high.  Please help us spread the word that the event has been canceled.  We deeply regret this announcement as we had added a number of new activities and expanded exhibits.  All is not lost however, in addition to being open daily (except Sundays) for regular tours, please remember that we will still be having our Way Back Weekend Festivities on the first Saturday of each month throughout the remainder of 2011 and we will utilize the "extra" opportunities normally at Spring Festival and spread them throughout the remaining Way Back Weekends beginning with "Recycled Beauty" (Quilting, Sheep Shearing, Braided Rugs) on Saturday, June 4, 2011.  Other Way Back Weekend opportunities will include: July 2 Youth Festival; August 6 Wood Festival; September 3 Appalachian Music Festival; October 1 Fall Harvest Festival; November 5 Hand Blown Glass; and December 3 Holiday Market.  If you have any questions or need further information, please call the Heritage Farm office at 304-522-1244 or visit us on-line at heritagefarmmuseum.com

Hillbilly Hotdogs... what a treat!

So some of us from the CVB decided to take a lunch trip to the heralded Hillbilly Hotdogs, featured on the Travel Channel and Food Network, and we must say--it's definitely worth the hype!

The ambiance is probably one of the most unique in the country, service was not only great, but fun, and the choice of hot dogs is certainly notable. The "Out Wayne Dog" with chili, bacon, and nacho and shredded cheeses was indeed excellent, the burgers were quite hearty, and the "Incubator Tater" had an extremely pleasant array of flavors and made other loaded baked potatoes look like tater tots.

Hillbilly Hotdogs definitely earned the CVB's seal of approval and if you're in town, make sure to stop by this unique restaurant!
